Angelina Phelan
Privileged to being born and raised on a farm in the islands of the Azores, Portugal, and surviving a high level amputation in childhood - two pivotal experiences that sculpted my outlook as a life enthusiast. I landed in Massachusetts as a young adult, weathered the Chemical Engineering degree venture at U Mass, but never mastered football vocabulary despite marriage to a coach for decades. To the forefront of other defining characteristics, I am a most blessed mother of two and a delighted grandmother of three love-bursting grandchildren.
When people stop and stare at a person with a missing leg (me), children and adults alike, decade after decade and across continents, their immediate limiting thought is visibly crushed when noticing that such person is exuding joy in day-to-day life. While the condition does indeed increase the level of difficulty for most tasks and activities, the reward is that much sweeter.
My motto: Where there is a will there is a way!
Among many lessons in my journey, a few rise to the top at this moment:
- Never compare yourself against others to find self worth (avoid envy up or scorn down). Avoid comparing yourself to who you were. Find a way to set yourself free of anything that imprisons you. Search until you are finally and unquestionably free.
- Get on with your life and maximize your true potential.
- Serving others brings immeasurable joy.
- Be grateful for all experiences, even the unpleasant ones, for these become the break-throughs and corner stones in life.
- Life is a gift - appreciate it today.
